The Waterside Hostel of Nulb: A Tavern of Whispers and Knives for Temple of Elemental Evil Greyhawk DND campaign

Image
A blog post by 3orcs for Dungeon Masters running the Temple of Elemental Evil In the backwaters of the Viscounty of Verbobonc , nestled against the murky banks of Imeryd’s Run , lies the festering hive of Nulb —and at its heart, the Waterside Hostel . It isn’t just an inn. It’s a cauldron of scheming pirates, cutthroats, cultists, and desperate adventurers, each seeking something—coin, glory, or power. If you're a Dungeon Master running T1: The Village of Hommlet and eyeing a deeper dive into the seedy roots of evil in Greyhawk, this is the side location to breathe life into. And trust me—when your party walks into this place, the adventure won’t wait until morning. A Note from 3orcs: How I Use the Waterside Hostel in My Campaign When I first ran Temple of Elemental Evil for my players, I knew I wanted the village of Nulb to feel like a slow-motion ambush. Everyone is watching. Everyone has a knife behind their back. That’s why I love the Waterside Hostel—it’s a tavern wi...

Temple of Elemental Evil – Leadership Organizational Structure

Image
Temple of Elemental Evil – Leadership Organizational Structure I’ve created this Temple Leadership Organizational Chart to give a clear breakdown of the forces available to each leader within the Temple of Elemental Evil . This chart focuses on active forces—those that can be deployed on missions, raids, and responses to player actions outside the Temple grounds. Why This Matters for DMs & Players: Tactical Depth – Know who commands what forces and how they react to intrusions. Factional Warfare – Understand internal rivalries and how they impact power struggles. Dynamic Responses – Plan intelligent counterattacks, reinforcements, and strategic operations. Intentional Omission: Static monsters (e.g., dungeon-bound creatures, traps, magical guardians) have been excluded to keep the focus on movable assets that leaders can actively command. Whether you're running a deep dive into Temple politics or preparing for high-stakes encounters, this chart gives you everything you need t...

The Leadership of the Temple of Elemental Evil: Power, Deception, and Chaos - Greyhawk DND Campaign

Image
After weeks of in-depth research and analysis, I am excited to finally unveil the definitive guide to the Leadership of the Temple of Elemental Evil (TOEE) . This article dives deep into the intricate power struggles, hidden agendas, and sinister ambitions of the Temple’s leadership, offering Dungeon Masters an invaluable resource when running the epic Temple of Elemental Evil campaign by Gary Gygax . A key revelation in this study, inspired by Joseph Bloch's research and the T5: Beneath the Temple of Elemental Evil module, suggests that the Elder Elemental God (EEG) lies buried deep within the Temple’s dungeons, exerting its influence over its devoted cultists. Understanding the leadership structure of the Temple is crucial for DMs looking to fully immerse their players in the World of Greyhawk . The Dark Hierarchy of the Temple The Temple of Elemental Evil operates under a complex web of leadership where dark forces such as Iuz the Old , Zuggtmoy the Demon Queen of Fungi , a...

Hedrack, Supreme Commander of the Temple of Elemental Evil: A Dungeon Master's Guide DND Greyhawk

Image
Supreme Commander of the Temple of Elemental Evil In the dark corridors of the infamous Temple of Elemental Evil , few names inspire as much dread and respect as Hedrack , the Supreme Commander of the temple’s chaotic forces. As the Mouth of Iuz , he serves as both emissary and puppet master, weaving a web of manipulation, intimidation, and ruthless ambition that keeps the cult factions in line—at least for now. Dungeon Masters preparing to run the classic T1 Village of Hommlet and its sequel Temple of Elemental Evil in their World of Greyhawk campaign should consider Hedrack a key figure in shaping the depth of their campaign's intrigue and danger. Whether you’re using the original AD&D module or adapting it for Old-School Essentials (OSE) or Castles & Crusades , Hedrack is a villain who demands attention. Who Is Hedrack? Hedrack is a high-ranking cleric and enforcer of Iuz the Old , charged with overseeing the Temple's operations, but his ambitions extend far bey...

Romag, High Priest of the Earth Temple: A Dungeon Master's DND Guide to Nulb and Beyond The Temple of Elemental Evil

Image
The Earth Prophet The Temple of Elemental Evil is one of the most iconic Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, steeped in intrigue, villainy, and ancient evils lurking beneath the surface. As Dungeon Masters (DMs) dive into the depths of this legendary adventure, understanding key NPCs such as Romag , the High Priest of the Earth Temple, becomes crucial to weaving a compelling narrative. Romag, the so-called Prophet of Earth , is a complex antagonist—calculating, pragmatic, and driven by a thirst for revenge. His faction may lack the explosive power of Fire or the insidious reach of Water, but through fortification and patience, Romag holds his position within the Cult of the Elder Elemental God . Who is Romag? Romag leads the Cult of the Black Earth within the Temple of Elemental Evil, inheriting his position from his predecessor, Barkinar. Despite lacking charisma and ambition, Romag’s strength lies in his strategic focus on defense, fortifications, and securing control over Nulb’...

The Cult of the Elder Elemental God: Dungeon Master's Guide to a Chaotic DND Campaign in the World of Greyhawk

Image
Leaders of the Temple of Elemental Evil  Greetings fellow Dungeon Masters! As a lifelong fan of the World of Greyhawk and an aficionado of the Temple of Elemental Evil , I wanted to dive into one of the most sinister and enthralling aspects of the campaign setting: The Cult of the Elder Elemental God (EEG) . This chaotic and enigmatic organization provides a rich vein of intrigue, political maneuvering, and outright terror for your players to experience. Let me take you through its history, motivations, and how to make this cult a cornerstone of your Dungeons & Dragons campaign. A History Rooted in Chaos The Cult of the Elder Elemental God is steeped in lore, its influence stretching back through the annals of Greyhawk's history. The god itself, known as Rentaq , represents the untamable chaos of creation and destruction, and its fractured form leaks corruption through shards scattered across the Flanaess . These shards empower the cult, giving rise to secret strongholds li...

Exploring the Ancient History of the Elder Elemental God and the Depths of the Temple of Elemental Evil

Image
Elder Elemental God When Dungeon Masters set out to guide their players through the legendary Temple of Elemental Evil , they are embarking on more than a dungeon crawl—they are delving into one of the most intricate and deeply layered stories in all of Dungeons & Dragons lore. The Elder Elemental God (EEG) , a shadowy cosmic power, and the Temple’s sinister machinations intertwine to create a narrative rich in mystery, danger, and political intrigue. Today, let’s unravel the ancient history of the EEG, the roles of the Temple’s five levels, and the motivations that drive key players, from the Drow to the unwitting adventurers. The Elder Elemental God: Primordial Chaos Before the gods shaped the world, there was the Elder Elemental God. The EEG is not a native deity of the multiverse but a being from a chaotic, alien dimension—a creature of writhing entropy. Unlike Zuggtmoy, the Demon Queen of Fungi, or Iuz, the cunning demigod, the EEG seeks not domination but utter chaos. It...

DM Notes - The Role of Nulb in T1-4 Temple of Elemental Evil

Image
Village of Nulb serves as an essential setting for Dungeon Masters running the classic T1-4 Temple of Elemental Evil by Gary Gygax and Frank Mentzer. Originally, the module offered only a brief glimpse into Nulb, leaving much of its intrigue, inhabitants, and locations open to interpretation. This publication aims to expand and reimagine Nulb, providing Dungeon Masters with a fully fleshed-out village to enhance their campaigns while staying true to Gygax's vision.  Original Vision of Nulb In the T1-4 Temple of Elemental Evil , Nulb is presented as a den of scum and villainy, a place where adventurers encounter danger at every turn. However, Gygax only keyed four specific locations and introduced a small roster of non-player characters (NPCs). Nulb was meant to be a haven for pirates, brigands, and cultists loyal to the Temple, but its potential as a campaign hub was left largely untapped. Gygax later mentioned in interviews that there were plans for additional Temple o...
