Grave-Soaked Secrets in the Shadow of Nulb, in the World of Greyhawk for the Temple of Elemental Evil DND campaign

How the Village Graveyard Became a Cornerstone of My Temple of Elemental Evil Campaign When I first laid eyes on the crumbling, moss-covered tombstones of the Nulb Graveyard , I didn’t expect it to become such a pivotal piece of my campaign. But that’s what I’ve come to love about building out the Verbobonc Campaign Guide 576cy —those small, seemingly forgotten places often reveal the most story-rich, atmospheric threads. Nulb , with its damp streets and looming threat of corruption, has always been a favorite location of mine when expanding upon the legendary Temple of Elemental Evil campaign by Gary Gygax. I’ve worked to bring this infamous, chaotic village to life—not as a cardboard cutout of evil, but as a living, breathing space of secrets, routines, and long-buried grief. The graveyard , tucked between Baroness Nysera’s Manor and the road to the old Temple ruins , is no exception. The Forgotten Heart of Nulb This is no grand cathedral graveyard. Exploring the Ancient History of the Elder Elemental God and the Depths of the Temple of Elemental Evil

 Elder Elemental God

When Dungeon Masters set out to guide their players through the legendary Temple of Elemental Evil, they are embarking on more than a dungeon crawl—they are delving into one of the most intricate and deeply layered stories in all of Dungeons & Dragons lore. The Elder Elemental God (EEG), a shadowy cosmic power, and the Temple’s sinister machinations intertwine to create a narrative rich in mystery, danger, and political intrigue. Today, let’s unravel the ancient history of the EEG, the roles of the Temple’s five levels, and the motivations that drive key players, from the Drow to the unwitting adventurers.

The Elder Elemental God: Primordial Chaos

Before the gods shaped the world, there was the Elder Elemental God. The EEG is not a native deity of the multiverse but a being from a chaotic, alien dimension—a creature of writhing entropy. Unlike Zuggtmoy, the Demon Queen of Fungi, or Iuz, the cunning demigod, the EEG seeks not domination but utter chaos. Its hunger for entropy threatens to unravel reality itself.

The Struggle for Control

The Temple of Elemental Evil, originally raised by Zuggtmoy to consolidate her influence, became a nexus for competing agendas. Beneath the surface, the forgotten Shrine of the Elder Elemental God exerts its influence. While Zuggtmoy and Iuz scheme for power, the EEG’s dormant presence undermines their plans, subtly manipulating cultists and leaders toward chaos.

The Role of the Drow and House Eilservs

A particularly fascinating layer of this conflict lies in the involvement of the Drow. The betrayal of House Eilservs, who abandoned the worship of Lolth to embrace the EEG, ignited a cold civil war within the Vault of the Drow. The Eilservs, seeking to challenge Lolth’s supremacy, saw the EEG as a means to tip the balance of power in their favor. Their cults and shrines, notably the infamous Temple of the Eye, became focal points for the EEG’s resurgence.

For Dungeon Masters, this offers a chance to weave the Drow’s fractured loyalties into their campaign, presenting players with moral dilemmas and political intrigue that extend beyond the dungeon walls.

The Temple’s architecture reflects its complex story, with each level serving a distinct purpose:

  1. The Surface and False Shrine: A facade to mislead cultists and adventurers alike. The false shrine, adorned with elemental symbols, serves as a recruitment and indoctrination site, hiding the EEG’s true influence.

  2. The First and Second Levels: These areas house the elemental cults of Earth, Fire, Air, and Water. Here, players encounter devoted priests and dangerous monsters, setting the stage for the conflicts to come.

  3. The Third Level: Zuggtmoy’s Domain: This level, once her throne room, is now her prison. Despite her confinement, her corrupting influence seeps into the surrounding chambers, creating a fungal nightmare.

  4. The Fourth Level: The Greater Temple: The central command of the Temple’s operations. The Greater Temple is a place of sinister rituals and dark schemes, linking directly to the Elemental Nodes and the EEG’s anomaly.

  5. The Fifth Level: The True Shrine: Hidden and guarded by eldritch horrors, this is where the EEG’s power manifests. Adventurers who reach this level face existential threats, as the rules of reality begin to fray under the god’s alien influence.

Motivations of Key Players

The Temple Leaders

The leaders of the Temple—Zuggtmoy, Iuz, and the elemental prophets—each pursue their own agendas. Zuggtmoy’s fungal ambitions, Iuz’s military conquests, and the EEG’s hunger for chaos create a volatile alliance, ready to implode at any moment.

The Adventurers

For player characters, survival often depends on their ability to uncover the Temple’s secrets without drawing the attention of its powerful leaders. Anonymity becomes their greatest protection, as the leaders’ immense power can crush even the most seasoned party.
