Guardian of the Wilds, Keeper of Balance
Deep in the untamed heart of the Gnarley Forest, where ancient oaks whisper their secrets and moss-covered ruins hide remnants of lost civilizations, one name commands both reverence and fear—Hrudek Oakheart. As the Archdruid of the Western Gnarley Forest, he is both protector and enforcer of nature’s will, ensuring that the encroachment of civilization does not upset the sacred balance of the land.
For Dungeon Masters running a Temple of Elemental Evil campaign, Hrudek is a pivotal NPC—an ally to those who respect the Old Faith, but a formidable adversary to those who threaten the forest’s harmony. His presence offers a wealth of story hooks, faction intrigue, and opportunities for deep character interactions.
Hrudek is a striking figure, embodying the wilds he protects. He is clad in a grey gambeson and a green cloak intertwined with living vines, which seem to move subtly as though alive. His piercing dark eyes betray his mixed Oeridian and Flannae heritage, carrying the weight of centuries of wisdom. His scimitar and hand sickle—symbols of both harvest and war—hang from his belt, ready to be wielded should the balance be threatened.
"The trees whisper the truth of ages past, if only you have the patience to listen."
— Archdruid Hrudek Oakheart
As the western Gnarley Forest’s primary druidic authority, Hrudek is a powerful force that stands between unchecked human expansion and the ancient forces of nature. He maintains tenuous peace between rangers, elves, and druidic circles, yet he will not hesitate to take action against those who would exploit the land for greed or destruction.
For adventurers, seeking Hrudek’s aid could provide valuable insights into the Temple of Elemental Evil’s growing corruption, particularly the elemental cults attempting to spread their influence into the Gnarley Forest.
The Old Faith teaches that balance must be preserved, yet Verbobonc, Dyvers, and the Free City of Greyhawk continue to expand, bringing civilization ever closer to the sacred groves of the Gnarley. Hrudek fears that unchecked logging, hunting, and territorial conflicts will disrupt the delicate equilibrium he has maintained for decades.
Druids of the Old Faith have begun whispering of war, urging Hrudek to take decisive action before the forest is lost forever. Will the adventurers mediate a solution, or will they find themselves caught in a growing conflict between nature and civilization?
Hrudek’s political connections make him a powerful ally or a daunting adversary in the campaign.
"The ambitions of men crumble to dust, but the roots of the Oerthmother remain."
Hrudek Oakheart is one of my favorite characters to use when running a Temple of Elemental Evil campaign in Greyhawk. He’s more than just a druid—he’s a guardian of balance, a political force, and a potential mentor or adversary depending on the players’ actions.
When I introduce Hrudek, I always lean into his wisdom and gravitas. He’s not the kind of NPC who speaks unless it matters, and when he does, his words carry weight. I also love making use of his ruined temple home—a site full of secrets and potential encounters, whether with ancient undead, lost Flannae artifacts, or political scheming.
