By 3orcs If you're like me, crafting an immersive fantasy world means digging deeper than stat blocks and encounter tables. It means knowing where the bread is baked, who tends the goats, and what the smith drinks after dusk . That’s why I want to talk to you today—not about dice, but about a game that’s become an unlikely but powerful source of inspiration for my Greyhawk campaign: Bellwright . Currently available as a beta on Steam , Bellwright is a medieval survival village builder meets RPG-strategy hybrid . And if you're a Dungeon Master running something as iconic as Temple of Elemental Evil , I highly recommend checking it out—not just for play, but for inspiration . What is Bellwright? Imagine this: You’re not just scavenging or surviving in the woods. You’re building a village , defending it, managing its farms and hunters, recruiting people to your banner, and slowly building a network of settlements that owe you their lives. Chausticlorinus, Verdant Wyrm of the Gnarley Verge – A Deadly Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil Campaign

By 3orcs and Haligaunt — Dungeon Master of Greyhawk's Forgotten Shadows

There are dragons… and then there is Chausticlorinus.

She’s not just a monster in a lair. She’s a whispered name, a forgotten fear, and now—once again—a looming threat over the eastern Gnarley Forest. If you’re running the Temple of Elemental Evil campaign and want to add depth, danger, and devastating choices, then this legendary green dragon’s reappearance in 576 CY is exactly the kind of storyline that will set your players on edge.

In today’s blog, we dig deep into the lore of Chausticlorinus, explore her lair, ties to the Temple of Elemental Evil, and how you can incorporate this cunning and seductive manipulator into your Greyhawk game.

✨ As always, full stat blocks, art, dialogue prompts, and adventure hooks are available in the Verbobonc Campaign Guide 576cy. For maps, images, and exclusive extras, support us on the 3orcs Patreon. You can also catch breakdowns and lore chats on the 3orcs YouTube Channel.

The Return of a Forgotten Terror

"She slithers through dreams and roots alike. Beware the whisper in the wind."
Annika Silverwood, Ranger-Knight

Chausticlorinus once haunted the Welkwood and the borderlands of Celene, weaving subtle webs of lies and betrayal between elven clans. Nearly slain by the heroic elf Freindilin Weirkein, the dragon vanished—until now. In 576 CY, her return near the Fens of Tor has reignited old fears.

She is beautiful, terrifying, and wickedly intelligent. Her serpentine form flows like emerald water, her fangs delicate yet deadly. Scars from the past gleam across her underbelly—a reminder of elven vengeance yet unfinished.

🐉 Dragon Summary

  • Type: Adult Green Dragon (Lawful Evil)

  • Current Domain: Eastern Gnarley Forest Verge

  • Lair Location: Northeast of the Fens of Tor (Fogweald)

  • Tactics: Charm, manipulation, illusion, dream invasion

  • Enemies: Gnarley Rangers, Druids of the Old Faith, Elves of Celene

  • Allies: Enchanted minions, dominated fey, cultists, kobolds, orcs

  • Motivations:

    • Expand her corrupted domain

    • Avenge her past defeat

    • Secure ancient planar or elemental power

The Fogweald – A Cursed Domain

Chausticlorinus’s lair, known as The Verdant Grave, lies concealed in a twisted glade disguised as a natural hillock. Inside: choking mists, glowing fungi, acidic pools, and a hoard of cursed trophies—including Freindilin’s +2 longsword and shield, powerful relics of Celene's history.

“The lair hasn’t been hiding from you. It’s been inviting you in.”
Narrative Excerpt from the Campaign Guide

The surrounding Fogweald is now overrun with cultic goblins and kobolds. These tribes build vine-woven idols to their “Green Mother,” raiding villages and demanding tribute. It's a perfect mid-campaign escalation point or dragon-themed subplot for ToEE games.

🌫️ Lair Highlights

  • Illusory terrain and poisoned vegetation

  • Hallucinatory mist (Wis DC 18 or suffer illusions)

  • Charmed fey and corrupted treants

  • Subtle dream-invasion of local NPCs

Faction Response – And Political Fallout

This isn’t just a wilderness threat—it’s a political powder keg.

  • The Gnarley Rangers are scrambling. Annika Silverwood has lost friends to the Fogweald. Parsimmon Turmercan calls for aid. Belgin urges caution.

  • The Druids of the Old Faith are alarmed. Naimur suspects the dragon seeks a node of elemental or planar power. Holdefer Paravis and Laric have activated ancient guardians.

  • The Elves of Celene burn with quiet vengeance. Though Queen Yolande holds to neutrality, younger warriors are defying her and slipping across the border.

  • The Temple of Elemental Evil may be involved. Whispers from Nulb and Dyvers suggest Chausticlorinus might be supplying cults or working with elemental forces once again.

Adventure Hooks for Temple of Elemental Evil DMs

Running ToEE and want to spice up the middle acts of your campaign? Here are some tailored plot hooks:

  • 🛡️ The Shield of Freindilin – PCs must recover the elf hero's shield to earn an alliance with Celene.

  • 👣 Dreams of the Green Lady – NPCs in Hommlet or Nulb begin acting strangely. They’ve been touched by Chausticlorinus’s illusions.

  • 🌿 The Red-Haired Woman – Rumors swirl of a charming redhead offering protection to settlements. She’s the dragon in disguise.

  • ⚔️ Elven Vengeance – A rogue elven warband seeks to storm the dragon’s lair. Do the PCs help? Stop them? Or get caught in the crossfire?

  • 🔥 Return of the Ranger – Drey Garson emerges from retirement, searching for Redaxe Randar. He seeks allies—perhaps the PCs?

3orcs Commentary – Bringing Chausticlorinus to Your Table

When I wrote Chausticlorinus, I wanted a dragon who didn’t just hoard treasure—but hoarded secrets, regret, and fear. She’s not a fire-breather you fight in a dungeon. She’s a force that infects a region with paranoia, political tension, and internal division.

My players never knew if she was the pretty bard in town… or the whisper in their dreams. She’s part of a deeper mystery tied to the Temple’s resurgence and to lost druidic secrets buried in the Gnarley’s roots.

Adding Chausticlorinus creates stakes that stretch beyond swordplay. It’s political, spiritual, personal. That’s what Greyhawk has always been to me.

Final Thoughts

Whether you're a veteran DM or just discovering Greyhawk, weaving Chausticlorinus into your Temple of Elemental Evil campaign elevates the stakes from dungeon delving to regional conflict. She’s the perfect blend of cunning, danger, and ancient evil that can stretch across multiple arcs.
