Running Noble Ambitions Inside Temple of Elemental Evil: The Suel Pantheon Toolkit for DMs

Image
If you’re threading Living Greyhawk’s Noble Ambitions through Temple of Elemental Evil (ToEE), the Suel ruins and gods aren’t just wallpaper—they’re switches and levers your players can read and pull. This post is my behind-the-screen guide to using my Suel Pantheon article as a practical, table-ready engine for side quests, clues, and atmosphere. TL;DR: This supplement gives you a readable Suel myth-map, visual keys for ruin symbols, fast DCs for “reading” rooms, and plug-in side quests—all built to snap directly into Noble Ambitions scenes inside the ToEE sandbox. Why I wrote this (and why it helps you run NA in ToEE) I’m 3orcs . I’ve spent years building the Verbobonc Campaign Guide 576cy —adventures, NPCs, art, and maps for running ToEE at epic, lived-in scale. My players weren’t satisfied with “a dusty mosaic and some orcs.” They wanted to decode the place. So I distilled the Suel mythos into table tools: A clear Elder Order list with symbols you can drop into ...

Bringing the Ur-Flan to Life in Your Temple of Elemental Evil DND Campaign

Expanding Your Greyhawk Campaign with Rich Lore, NPCs, and Side Quests

Greyhawk is one of the greatest settings in Dungeons & Dragons history, and the Temple of Elemental Evil campaign is an unforgettable adventure. But as a Dungeon Master, have you ever wanted to go beyond the core module? Have you wanted to immerse your players in the dark, forgotten histories of Oerth? That’s where the Ur-Flan, an ancient and sinister civilization, comes in.

In this post, I’ll explore how you can use the History of the Ur-Flan to enhance your Temple of Elemental Evil campaign. Whether you're running T1: The Village of Hommlet or planning a broader Greyhawk sandbox, this guide will give you NPCs, side quests, and locations that make your world feel alive.

And if you're looking for detailed artwork, NPC dialog, and additional quests, check out the Verbobonc Campaign Guide 576 CY website for free resources. I also deep-dive into these topics on the 3orcs YouTube channel, where I discuss everything from campaign prep to running immersive side stories in Greyhawk!

Why the Ur-Flan Matter in Temple of Elemental Evil

The Ur-Flan were the dark predecessors of the Flan peoples, mastering necromantic arts, forming pacts with fiends, and ruling through sorcerous tyranny. Many of their ruins still dot the Flanaess, serving as deadly dungeons and cursed locations filled with undead horrors, forbidden knowledge, and long-lost artifacts.

What does this mean for your campaign? The Temple of Elemental Evil has deep ties to ancient evils, but it doesn’t fully explore the deeper history behind these ruins and dark forces. Adding the Ur-Flan into your campaign creates:

  • Ancient ruined strongholds where cultists seek lost necromantic power.
  • Side quests for your players—why are the cultists so obsessed with these forgotten tyrants?
  • Powerful artifacts and forgotten rituals—perhaps the Cult of Elemental Evil is trying to unearth a deeper, more terrifying power from the Ur-Flan era.

Expanding the Campaign: The Forest Road & Twilight Falls

One of the best ways to expand your Temple of Elemental Evil campaign is by adding new locations and threats. That’s where Twilight Falls and the Forest Road come in.

The Forest Road & the Mounted Borderers

The Forest Road is the vital trade route connecting Dyvers (to the north), The Wild Coast (to the east), and the Viscounty of Verbobonc (to the west). The Mounted Borderers patrol the area, but they’re stretched thin. Bandits, monsters, and even cultists tied to the Temple are threatening these roads, making it a perfect side quest for adventurers.

Twilight Falls: A Dark Mystery

A once-thriving village, Twilight Falls has fallen into darkness. Traders whisper about strange lights in the hills, and entire caravans have disappeared. The local priest believes something older than the Temple of Elemental Evil is awakening near the village.

Adventure Hooks for Twilight Falls

  • The PCs are hired to guard a caravan along the Forest Road, only to be attacked by unknown forces—are they cultists, undead, or something worse?
  • A half-mad scholar in Hommlet begs the PCs to investigate Ur-Flan ruins near Twilight Falls.
  • The Mounted Borderers seek aid—they’re losing patrols in the region and suspect a necromantic force is at work.

How This Helps Your Players & New Characters in Greyhawk

One of the biggest challenges for new players is figuring out their place in the world. Running a side quest tied to the Ur-Flan helps players:

  • Connect their backstories to the world. Maybe a PC’s ancestors fled the Ur-Flan? Maybe a wizard PC seeks lost spells?
  • Have low-stakes, but high-reward content. Not every adventure needs to involve the Temple itself—sometimes a side quest to a haunted ruin is a great way to break up the main plot.
  • Understand the stakes of the world. If the Ur-Flan’s dark legacy still lingers, what other ancient evils might exist?

Bringing It All Together – NPCs, Quests, and Resources

If you want to bring the world of Greyhawk to life, the Verbobonc Campaign Guide 576 CY has:
Detailed NPCs & dialogue

Final Thoughts: Making Greyhawk Your Own

Greyhawk is a DM’s paradise because it’s rich in lore but open-ended. The Ur-Flan, the Forest Road, and Twilight Falls are just a few ways to expand the Temple of Elemental Evil into something even greater.

Whether you use these ideas as written or tweak them for your own table, I hope they inspire you to craft unforgettable adventures.
