Running Noble Ambitions Inside Temple of Elemental Evil: The Suel Pantheon Toolkit for DMs

Image
If you’re threading Living Greyhawk’s Noble Ambitions through Temple of Elemental Evil (ToEE), the Suel ruins and gods aren’t just wallpaper—they’re switches and levers your players can read and pull. This post is my behind-the-screen guide to using my Suel Pantheon article as a practical, table-ready engine for side quests, clues, and atmosphere. TL;DR: This supplement gives you a readable Suel myth-map, visual keys for ruin symbols, fast DCs for “reading” rooms, and plug-in side quests—all built to snap directly into Noble Ambitions scenes inside the ToEE sandbox. Why I wrote this (and why it helps you run NA in ToEE) I’m 3orcs . I’ve spent years building the Verbobonc Campaign Guide 576cy —adventures, NPCs, art, and maps for running ToEE at epic, lived-in scale. My players weren’t satisfied with “a dusty mosaic and some orcs.” They wanted to decode the place. So I distilled the Suel mythos into table tools: A clear Elder Order list with symbols you can drop into ...

The Gnarley Rangers – Wardens of the Wild of the World of Greyhawk in Gnarley Forest DND campaign

By 3orcs | Greyhawk Campaign Guide 576 CY

At the shadowed edge of the civilized world, where mist curls through ancient trees and the wind whispers forgotten names, the Gnarley Rangers walk paths few others dare. They are the last line between the creeping dark and the settled lands of the Viscounty of Verbobonc. They are sword and bow, shield and silence, sentinels of the deep forest. And they are yours to bring to life in your Temple of Elemental Evil campaign.

As a longtime Dungeon Master and Greyhawk fan, let me tell you: there is no better way to breathe danger and mystery into your T1 Village of Hommlet sessions than to weave the Gnarley Rangers into your side quests, politics, and player backstories. This isn’t just another faction—it’s a legacy of grit, sacrifice, and unwavering loyalty to the wilds.

Who Are the Gnarley Rangers?

The Gnarley Rangers are an elite, independent force of scouts, hunters, monster-slayers, and wilderness protectors. Numbering around 200 strong in 576 CY, they are decentralized and fiercely autonomous. Most answer to no lord or temple, save the forest itself.

They protect the Gnarley Forest, a vast and ancient woodland that touches the realms of Dyvers, the Free Lands, the Wild Coast, and the Viscounty of Verbobonc. In your campaign, the Gnarley Rangers are perfectly poised to act as reluctant allies, cryptic quest-givers, or even wary rivals to over-eager adventuring parties.

Faction Traits and Roleplay Flavor

  • Alignment: Mostly good or neutral; fiercely independent
  • Typical Members: Humans, half-elves, elves, and the occasional woods-dwelling dwarf or gnome
  • Beliefs: Protect the Gnarley. Trust the land. Respect the Old Ways.

The Gnarley Rangers don't issue commands or seek power—they observe, defend, and disappear into the woods. They have a deep alliance with the Druids of the Old Faith and maintain close ties with the four elven clans of the forest's heartlands.

3orcs’ Campaign Tips

In my current Temple of Elemental Evil campaign set around the village of Hommlet and the western Gnarley, the Gnarley Rangers offer the perfect bridge between the rustic innocence of Hommlet and the deadly wilderness crawling with bandits, orcs, and cult agents. Here’s how you can do the same:

  • Introduce a Mysterious Ally: A ranger shows up to warn the party about increasing raider activity near the Moathouse ruins. He’s grim, covered in forest dust, and gone by the next dawn.
  • Quest Hooks from the Shadows: The rangers may ask players to track a corrupted druid or investigate signs of elemental cult activity deeper in the woods.
  • Trust Is Earned: The Gnarley Rangers aren’t immediately friendly. The players must prove themselves by protecting sacred groves, defending elf settlements, or standing against poachers and loggers.

Allies and Enemies

Allies:

  • Druids of the Gnarley Forest: Rangers and druids patrol together, conduct rituals, and share intelligence on unnatural threats like the Black Thorn Orcs or cults of Tharizdun.
  • Elven Clans: The Sylvan Elves respect the rangers as protectors, though Grey Elves regard them with caution.
  • Woodsmen Villages: Small settlements rely on the Gnarley Rangers for warnings, guidance, and protection from humanoid raids.

Enemies:

  • Bandits and Humanoid Warbands: Many of these raiders are supported by the Temple of Elemental Evil and would love to see the Rangers eradicated.
  • Cult of the Elder Elemental Eye: These forces are actively corrupting natural sites, attracting aberrations, and threatening the spiritual balance.
  • Politicians of Verbobonc & Dyvers: Some view the Gnarley Rangers as stubborn anarchists with too much influence in the wild.

Using the Rangers in Your Temple of Elemental Evil Campaign

Plot Hooks and Adventure Seeds:

  • 🔹 Missing Patrols: Rangers have vanished near an ancient, sealed elemental shrine. The party must investigate.
  • 🔹 The Old Path Reclaimed: A forgotten elven road may lead to an unholy cult site—only a ranger knows how to find it.
  • 🔹 Aid the Wild: The Rangers need help protecting a sacred druidic grove from orc incursions tied to the Black Thorn Tribe.
  • 🔹 Ranger Contact: Introduce a named NPC like Drey Garson or Redaxe Randar (see my previous blog posts!) as the group's main forest contact.

Lore Deep Dive: Ehlonna and the Old Faith

The Gnarley Rangers walk with the blessing of Ehlonna, goddess of the forest and fertility. Their partnership with the druids of the Old Faith is not just political—it’s spiritual. Together, they stand as the soul of the Gnarley.

Ehlonna’s clergy often serve as mentors or mystical guides to younger rangers. Your campaign could easily feature a sacred site of Ehlonna under threat, and a mission to save it could reveal vital clues about the return of the Temple of Elemental Evil.

Final Thoughts from 3orcs

If you’re running T1 Village of Hommlet or any part of the classic Temple of Elemental Evil campaign, the Gnarley Rangers are one of your strongest tools to make the world feel wild, reactive, and very much alive.

I recommend giving your players opportunities to earn the trust of the Rangers. Let their choices matter. Have the Rangers disagree with reckless destruction. Give them personalities—some bitter, some noble, all haunted.
