Greetings, fellow Dungeon Masters! It’s your favorite Greyhawk enthusiast, 3orcs, here to share exciting updates to the Verbobonc Campaign Guide 576cy. I’ve just expanded and updated the Viscounty of Verbobonc map on the 3orcs World Anvil page, adding fresh details, adjusting key locations, and making a few strategic changes that I’m eager to explain.
This post will cover the new features, the thought process behind these updates, and how they can elevate your Temple of Elemental Evil campaign. Let’s delve into the intricate tapestry of Verbobonc! The Updated Viscounty Map

Eastern Viscounty of Verbobonc

The latest iteration of the Verbobonc map brings a wealth of detail and enhanced accuracy to this beloved region:
- Elf Clans in the Gnarley Forest: These communities now have clearer representation on the map, offering fresh opportunities for role-playing and alliances.
- Cienega Valley Renamed to Nigb’s Rest: This adjustment reflects my personal preference after years of contemplation and community feedback. “Cienega Valley” always felt disconnected, and Nigb’s Rest aligns better with Greyhawk’s lore.
- Enhanced Tagging System: New tags make it easier for Dungeon Masters to locate specific areas, from trade routes to adventuring hotspots.
These changes enhance immersion and streamline navigation, making the map a more useful tool for DMs and players alike. View the free interactive map here: Viscounty of Verbobonc Map
Why Nigb’s Rest?
I’ve been asked this question a lot since the name change. Here’s the scoop:
The original Living Greyhawk module named the town “Cienega Valley,” inspired by a real-world location in California. While the module provided a great starting point, the name always felt out of place in the Flanaess. After consulting with other Greyhawk veterans and reflecting on the feedback from our community, I decided to adopt the name Nigb’s Rest. This new name better fits the aesthetic and lore of the setting and aligns with updates made by Greyhawk Reborn and Hommlet Rebooted.Historical Context
Verbobonc is more than a collection of locations—it’s a living, breathing realm with a rich history and vibrant culture. Here’s a snapshot:
- Strategic Position: Nestled between the Velverdyva River and the Kron Hills, the Viscounty has always been a crossroads for trade, diplomacy, and conflict.
- Cultural Melting Pot: With a population that includes humans, elves, gnomes, and halflings, Verbobonc’s diversity is both its strength and a source of political tension.
- Faith and Power: The influence of St. Cuthbert looms large, but many other deities are worshipped here, adding layers of intrigue and potential plot hooks.
How to Use the Map in Your Campaign
This updated map isn’t just a visual aid—it’s a storytelling engine. Here are some ways you can use it in your Temple of Elemental Evil campaign:
Geography and Exploration
- Plot travel routes between Verbobonc City, the Village of Hommlet, and Nigb’s Rest.
- Use the Gnarley Forest elf clans as a source of knowledge or as wary allies.
- Incorporate the rivers and hills into your encounters, adding terrain-based challenges and opportunities.
Politics and Leadership
- Introduce rivalries between Verbobonc’s noble houses, merchants, and clergy, using the map to visualize their spheres of influence.
- Create side quests tied to disputes over land or resources, such as conflicts between Nigb’s Rest farmers and Kron Hill miners.
Adventure Hooks
- Hidden shrines in the Gnarley Forest could hold forgotten relics or attract dangerous cultists.
- Nigb’s Rest, as a renamed location, offers a fresh slate for unique NPCs, local lore, and ongoing mysteries.
DM Advice: Making the Map Come Alive
To maximize the impact of the updated map, keep these tips in mind:
- Describe the Scenery: Use vivid descriptions of the rolling grasslands, shadowy forests, and bustling trade routes to immerse your players.
- Leverage NPCs: Tie key locations to memorable NPCs with distinct motivations and quirks.
- Dynamic Encounters: Design encounters that utilize the terrain and geography of Verbobonc—ambushes on trade routes, negotiations in a Gnarley Forest glade, or a desperate chase along the Velverdyva River.
Closing Thoughts
The Viscounty of Verbobonc is a treasure trove of storytelling potential. This updated map is more than a resource—it’s an invitation to dive deeper into the world of Greyhawk and craft unforgettable adventures. Whether you’re running the Temple of Elemental Evil or creating your own sandbox campaign, the map and its updates provide endless inspiration.
